For Kathy Smith, clothing and fashion are an extension of who she is. Raised by a mom who was a professional model, Kathy had a bird’s eye view into styling at an early age as she accompanied her mom on photo shoots and watched as a styling team pulled together an eclectic array of clothing and accessories for her mom to bring to life. She recalls being stimulated by the colors, shapes and silhouettes of the selected fashions and speaks fondly of the impact this experience had on her career path.

After graduating from Boston College, she applied and was accepted into the Saks Fifth Avenue Retail Training Program, a highly coveted coup for any college grad looking to start a retail career. At SFA, Kathy often referred to her work as “play” as part of her responsibilities included styling windows and other visual displays and studying global trend reports. She was hooked!

Her retail career continued when she was hired by Talbots as a buyer. Over the course of her 15 year career with the company, Kathy moved into managing and then directing the catalog side of the business, including overseeing production of 47 catalogs annually. Notes Kathy, “I was fortunate to travel extensively while working for Talbots. I visited London, Paris, Milan and Florence at least twice a year on buying trips. I sharpened my eye for what constitutes quality and good design, and then translated this knowledge in a way that would benefit and inspire our customers.”

Before joining our team, Kathy was an Independent Style Consultant for the California-based company Carol Anderson By Invitation. She fell in love with the personal, one-on-one interaction of helping women look and feel their best, further honing her skills for understanding individual fit, fabric, color and lifestyle needs – all aspects of our Dressing Well philosophy.

“By joining Dressing Well as a stylist, my ability to create wardrobes for clients has gone to a whole new level,” says Kathy. “Not only am I able to tap into the company's vast network and resources, but I am deeply grateful to be part of an organization that is a national leader not only in individual styling but also in the development and delivery of professional image and executive presence workshops across the country. I have found a new professional home and could not be happier!”

Adds client Beth Gamble: “Kathy is a perfect addition to your team! I am thrilled with her skills – she has a gift. We began in my closet to transition my wardrobe from winter to spring while at the same time planning what to pack for a trip to Bermuda. After Kathy and I reviewed everything and discussed what would make sense to add for Bermuda, we went shopping! Kathy was very easy to be with, quickly figured out what sizes worked best for tops and bottoms, and brought me wonderful options to try on. She put together great outfits and definitely has an eye for fun accessories. Our first session was so successful, I booked another one immediately! I’m confident that my wardrobe will work perfectly no matter where I am or what I’m doing. As a longtime client of your firm, I’m happy to say that Kathy exemplifies the excellence I’ve come to expect – she is a great hire!”

Kathy resides in Wellesley, MA with her husband Tim and three children Brendan, Katie and Christian.

A native of Boston, Carolyn received a BA in economics from Washington University in St. Louis and a MA in teaching at Simmons College.

Firm President & Founder Mary Lou Andre notes, "What caught my eye when Carolyn’s resume came across my desk was her experience in the financial services industry early in her career and the years she spent teaching elementary school after she received a masters in education at Simmons College. Many of our clients work in financial services so I knew she would be able to easily relate to their needs. In addition, a big piece of what we do is teach, coach and motivate people. I assumed that Carolyn's teaching skills would transfer to her work as a consultant, and I have not been disappointed."

In addition to fashion, Carolyn is passionate about fitness and healthy living. She is also a certified group fitness instructor and teaches many different formats, including LES MILLS™ BodyCombat™ and LES MILLS™ BodyFlow™. She feels that teaching fitness classes and being a wardrobe consultant have allowed her to help people feel their best, both physically and emotionally. She is deeply satisfied to be able to work in both the fashion and fitness industries, as each discipline dovetails beautifully with the other.

And Carolyn's clients are satisfied with her too! Says client Jill Roeting, "I absolutely love Carolyn. She has great fashion sense, knows how to articulate why something works or doesn’t work and intuitively knows just when to gently encourage me to step out of my comfort zone and try new things that I would never consider on my own. I can’t tell you how many of these pieces have become my favorite items to wear. She is organized, has a great energy level and is confident in her decisions. She is sensitive to budgets and moves the process along without wasting time. I am thrilled with the two closet consultations and the shopping trip I have had with Carolyn. I have fewer clothes but more to wear. Thank you for setting me up with such a wonderful person and true professional."

Our Story

Mary Lou Andre started Organization By Design, Inc. in 1992 with no clients, no capital and very little personal money to put into the business.  She sold her wedding dress to pay for stationary and business cards and even more clothes out of her closet to buy a computer and memberships to women's organizations where she could meet and network with women who could afford her services.

Beyond the Closet

As the business grew, she realized that her wardrobe management and fashion tips and strategies could be taught outside the closet. Her consulting with private clients led to seminars and presentations for the general public, as well as extensive corporate image consulting for such organizations as Estee Lauder, Fidelity, Harvard Business School, John Hancock, Nordstrom, Sara Lee, and Sonesta Hotels and Resorts. She ventured into print, publishing the Dressing Well newsletter, a quarterly publication that offered seasonal wardrobe information and tips to subscribers. Her dressing well message is now shared with thousands of Internet readers around the world who visit dressingwell.com and subscribe to our Dressing Well monthly newsletter and blog posts.

National Recognition

The enthusiastic response to the company's consulting, seminars, national and international media appearances, newsletter and website helped Mary Lou attract the attention of Perigee Books, a division of the Penguin Group.   In 2004, she secured a contract to write "Ready to Wear:  An Expert’s Guide to Choosing and Using Your Wardrobe."  Ready to Wear has been published in Japanese and has been hailed as a timeless system for organizing, building and managing a wardrobe that compliments a variety of lifestyles and professions.

Sarah Zengo has always been a firm believer in the power of personal presentation and the importance of looking and feeling your best. When she joined the Organization By Design team, it was a dream come true.

A native of Boston, Sarah obtained her Master's degree in Communications Management at Simmons College. While writing a research paper for the program on personal shopping in the area, Sarah came across the Organization By Design website and fell in love with the professionalism of the company and practical approach to dressing well documented in Mary Lou Andre's book, Ready to Wear. Years later, Sarah met Mary Lou and was invited to join the team.

Sarah's love of fashion and creativity has been influenced greatly by her mother, an artist, and their frequent excursions to museums and art studios when she was a child. This exposure to art at a young age sparked Sarah's innate sense of style and passion for fashion. "I have always loved helping people and have a great appreciation for how much personal confidence is linked to the beauty you create in your environment—for me this translates into what to wear and how to wear it. When I found Organization By Design, Inc., I knew that I was meant to be part of this fantastic group and I am honored to represent the company."

Notes firm Founder & President Mary Lou Andre, "Sarah is a breath of fresh air to all of us at Organization By Design, including her clients. Her positive attitude, excellent fashion sense and ability to switch gears fast to get any job done is impressive. She is a team player who truly partners with her clients by first closely listening to them and then appropriately guiding them to deliver the results they are seeking."

Sarah studied English at UMass Amherst, and also studied abroad including an internship at Condé Nast Publications, Inc. in London where she worked for several of the company's magazine publications including Condé Nast Traveler and Vogue. Her extensive experience in alumna relations and development at Simmons College brings additional depth to her keen awareness of how to effectively read situations and work with people from diverse backgrounds."

Adds client Katie Corbett, "My time with Sarah was the best gift my parents could have given me at this juncture in my career. Sarah not only upgraded my business casual wardrobe to help me get ready for my new job but she went the distance to find pants that truly fit me. Once we landed on the brand that provided the perfect fit, we stocked up and were able to get lots of looks from each pair by mixing them with a variety of tops, blazers and outerwear. I love the skirts and dresses we found too. She educated me about alterations and really nailed the shoes. I can't wait to shop with her again. She's fun and relaxing to be around. I feel totally ready to start my new job!"

Sarah lives in Boston with her husband Chris and two small children Jack and Molly.
