Each month, Mary Lou answers (and we post!) a fashion question from one of our site visitors. If you have something you want to know to help pull together your wardrobe with style and confidence, ask away! We also announce that the monthly question and answer is available to read in our free weekly Dressing Well "Tip of the Week!" You may want to subscribe if you haven't already done so. Bookmark this page and return back soon to see if your question has been answered! For September, 2003: Q: When should I put my Capri pants away? Is it ever okay to wear them with socks or hose? A: Capri pants defined as ending mid-calf are considered a casual, summer dress choice and are not the best pant length to wear after Labor Day if you live in a climate with a temperature change. Having said that, they can still be pulled out if you get some unseasonably warm days in September. When choosing to wear them into September on warm days, use common sense. Those made of denim or khaki, for instance, are a better choice in the fall than those made of white linen. Since the shoe of choice with capri's is most often a sandal, you might want to wear a mule or a sneaker with your capri's when donning them after Labor Day. On the other hand, cropped pants defined as ending just above the ankle are fine on most days through September when worn with mules or loafers and no socks. We've seen dressy styles pulled off well with sling-back pumps and hose but it does take a trained eye to carry this look off. In October, heavier-weight (i.e. leather, suede or corduroy) cropped pants can be worn with a mid-calf or a knee-high boot. These boot styles connect the pant bottom to your foot without creating a distracting break in the line. It's never "in fashion" to wear capri pants with any type of hose. Nine out of ten times, socks look out of sync with any type of cropped pants as well. Hope this helps! |
