Q: I recently fell in love with an expensive pair of chocolate brown ankle boots and bought them on impulse. They are a little more fashion-forward (i.e. a chunky heel and a square toe) than I'm used to wearing and I'm having a hard time figuring out how to incorporate them into my wardrobe. Before I return them, any suggestions?
A: Many of our clients only wear black footwear because it is the easiest color to coordinate and makes dressing a snap. However, brown is also an excellent neutral and can be added to your wardrobe nicely when you follow a few simple strategies.
First, if you wear belts, select at least one in the same color and finish as your new boots. Matching your footwear to your belt can instantly pull an outfit together. If you don't wear belts, wearing a chocolate brown sweater untucked over the waist of a pant or skirt can achieve the same affect.
Although blue jeans and khaki pants with a boot-cut leg are the most obvious bottoms to wear with the brown boots you describe, long and short skirts also look good with ankle boots. A pair of chocolate brown tights in the same hue as the boots is a sophisticated choice that can make your legs look longer and leaner.
Finally, if you decide to keep your boots, consider investing in a brown leather jacket. You'll feel extra sharp and you can probably find one on sale this month.
