Each month, Mary Lou answers (and we post!) a fashion question from one of our site visitors. If you have something you want to know to help pull together your wardrobe with style and confidence, ask away! We also announce that the monthly question and answer is available to read in our free weekly Dressing Well "Tip of the Week!" You may want to subscribe if you haven't already done so. For November, 2003: Q: How does a professional woman get from a daytime office job to a much dressier evening affair during the week without going home first to change? A: Start your day in a suit either pant or skirted styles are acceptable for evening events these days. Black is always a safe choice to take you from work to a party, but this year, gray and shades of deep, crimson red are tied as second runners up. Winter white suiting also has day to evening appeal in the month of December especially if it has a detachable collar with beads, satin or fur. Toting along a fancy top such as a beaded camisole, some festive jewelry and pair of dressy shoes also makes sense. At day’s end, switch your blouse and shoes and pile on your jewelry to instantly dress up your outfit. Cardigan twin sets with embellished detailing are also popular this holiday season and can be easily packed into most briefcases or totes. A “little black dress” with a matching jacket is another staple for many professional women and comes in handy this time of year. A double or triple stand of pearls is often the perfect way to accessorize it day or night and is a perfect choice for the more conservative woman. If the event you will be attending is work-related, there is a lot to be said for looking festive without sacrificing your professionalism. We recommend wearing a jacket, cardigan sweater or dresses with capped sleeves as a way to maintain proper business boundaries. In other words, showing too much skin might not be the best career move! |
