Tip of the Week Archives

Yes! I have a question!

Ask Mary Lou!

Each month, Mary Lou answers (and we post!) a fashion question from one of our site visitors. If you have something you want to know to help pull together your wardrobe with style and confidence, ask away!

We also announce that the monthly question and answer is available to read in our free weekly Dressing Well "Tip of the Week!" You may want to subscribe if you haven't already done so.

Bookmark this page and return back soon to see if your question has been answered!

For February 2001:

Q: I'm attending an afternoon tea party for a few friends and we've been encouraged to dress the part. What is appropriate dress for such an event?

A: If your tea party is in the city at a place like The Ritz, I would advise wearing a dressy suit and a classic pump. Pearls are an easy accessory choice for an elegant afternoon affair.

If the tea is at someone's home, I would choose a dressy twin set, which is a cardigan sweater with a matching shell, (i.e. maybe with some beads or sequins) and a dress slack.

No matter where your tea party is being held, err on the side of being too conservative rather than too "after 5"!
