For March, 2001:
Q: I'm planning on taking a spring vacation to the Caribbean and I don't want to over pack (or spend!) getting ready for this trip. Do you have any suggestions about what to bring?
A: Matte jersey — a soft, stretchable knitted fabric — should be in every busy woman's closet if you vacation.
It drapes well, hides a multiple of sins and rolls up to almost nothing in a suitcase or other travel tote. The four pieces you shouldn't be without are a flared pant, "A" line skirt (both with elastic waist), a tank and a cardigan. Select these basics in a base color of black, taupe or navy and you'll be wearing them everywhere from the beach to shopping and out to dinner just by changing the accessories.
You can go away for a week, bringing little more than a few colorful tops, shorts, sandals and an assortment of bathing suits, when you use these pieces as your base wardrobe.
