Each month, Mary Lou answers (and we post!) a fashion question from one of our site visitors. If you have something you want to know to help pull together your wardrobe with style and confidence, ask away! We also announce that the monthly question and answer is available to read in our free weekly Dressing Well "Tip of the Week!" You may want to subscribe if you haven't already done so. Bookmark this page and return back soon to see if your question has been answered! For March, 2002: Q: In wearing different black garments at the same time, do the shades of black need to match? I bought a black blazer that is dotted with a small white pattern. The blazer is a very light black that does not match any of my black skirts or pants. Should I try to match it with another garment in the same shade or black, or is it okay to wear shades of black that do not match? Or would it be better to wear it with another color altogether? A: It takes a pretty well-trained fashion eye to pull off wearing different shades of black together. Fabrication, texture and style all play a role. Try matching your jacket to a print pant or skirt. Printed bottoms are very popular this season. An easy choice would be a black and white printed skirt or pant worn with a white top, the blazer and black accessories (shoes, belt & bag). Take your jacket to the store with you to be sure the outfit looks pulled together and well-balanced. Ask a sales person for help and/or a second opinion. Good luck! |
