Tip of the Week Archives

Yes! I have a question!

Ask Mary Lou!

Each month, Mary Lou answers (and we post!) a fashion question from one of our site visitors. If you have something you want to know to help pull together your wardrobe with style and confidence, ask away!

We also announce that the monthly question and answer is available to read in our free weekly Dressing Well "Tip of the Week!" You may want to subscribe if you haven't already done so.

For June, 2002:

Q: I have a pair of black matte jersey slacks with an elastic waist. On the same day, I have to go from a Bridal Shower in a house to a graduation party in the evening, at a house also. Can you suggest a top to wear with the slacks that is appropriate for both parties? I wore the slacks last year but have gained a few pounds around the mid-section, so the sweaters I wore with them don't look as good.

A: If you are sensitive about your mid-section (and who over the age of 30 isn't!), consider wearing a white linen shirt/jacket (i.e. ends mid-thigh) unbuttoned over the slacks. A silk tee in a color flattering to your personality and skin-tone worn underneath the shirt (powder blue or red are nice accents with black and white this year) will pull the outfit together. This look will take you to both parties with ease and comfort. With an elastic waist pant, be sure to leave the silk tee un-tucked over the pant for an even more slimming effect. Linen goes nicely with the matte jersey and shirt jackets in general are quite handy for dressy casual events. A black sandal and some interesting jewelry will complete your look. All the major department stores have linen shirt/jackets in their house brand collection at reasonable prices. We also like the shirt/jackets made of Irish Linen sold at Talbots. Irish Linen is typically more expensive yet wrinkles less than some other linens. You usually get what you pay for when purchasing linen!
