For September, 2002:
Q: I have an interview this coming Tuesday with a large golfing organization (the office is small). The position is in management, however I would only manage myself and my own projects, no individuals.
I'm 27 years old and I've worked in entertainment and new media marketing for five years (Warner Bros.) and never had to wear a suit. I don't even own a suit. Should I wear one for the interview? Or can I wear a conservative suit-skirt with a button-up blouse and conservative heels? Or suit-slacks? Every time I try suits on (although I'm tall and thin) I feel bulky and awkward. Once again the industry is golf.
A: You can't go wrong with a suit. In my opinion, not having a jacket on for a formal interview can be risky. A classically cut pantsuit in a contemporary fabric should not feel bulky and can help you come across as confident and sophisticated. A well-fitted jacket gives most women a competitive edge and instantly sets a business tone. Two good objectives to have when seeking employment!
