For April, 2005:

Q: I am hosting a business event. How do I describe the attire for women when I identify the attire for men to be jackets with collared shirts but no tie?

A: : "Smart casual" and "business casual" are the "technical" terms to describe what you are looking for. However, the interpretation of these terms is all over the board. I would tell the woman to wear pantsuits, tailored slacks and skirts with twin sets and other business appropriate tops. When in doubt, layer (with a jacket, shirt or sweater) and remember that the details matter (shoes, belts and accessories should set a business tone whether you are wearing a suit or choose to wear more relaxed business attire.) Bottom line — men have it easy. Women ALWAYS have to think about it!
