Here's your chance! Each month, Mary Lou answers your fashion, wardrobe, and accessorizing questions. If you have something that you need to know, ask away! If your question is chosen, you'll receive a complimentary Organization By Design Survival Kit. What have you got to lose?! For June, 1998: Q: What is an appropriate length for a dress or skirt in the office, and is it ever appropriate to go without nylons in a professional office environment? A: We define inappropriate dress as anything that is distracting. Typically, a skirt or dress any shorter than two inches above the knee does not set a business tone. In very professional settings (i.e law firms, banks etc...) hoisery is expected and enhances your professional image. Wearing hoisery in even the most casual business enviroment when you are wearing a skirt of any length, creates a nice business boundary between you, your co-workers, clients and vendors. It's also a sign of respect. It may be okay to wear long skirts on a hot day in a less formal business enviroment without nylons -- use your best judgement. When in doubt, ask management what is expected. |
