For December 2009:
Q: Is it appropriate to wear strappy, high-heel black sandals with my holiday outfits here in the Northeast? If it’s okay, what kind of hosiery is the best option? Should I wear sheer black or nude, and do they make hosiery that is completely seamless in the toe?
A: It's fine to wear sandals in the winter for after five affairs, especially if they are made with seasonally appropriate materials such as patent leather or suede which don’t scream summer. Nude as well as sheer black hosiery can both work. If you have great legs, wear nude. If you need a little more coverage, sheer black is a better choice as long as the rest of the outfit is primarily dark in color. Although more expensive than many other brands, Donna Karen and Wolford are our number one choices if you desire a natural look sans obvious toe seams. Also, select the fashions you wear with sandals this time of the year wisely. The less leg you show, the less the emphasis will be on whether or not you are wearing hosiery with your sandals. If the hem on your outfit is at or above your knee, opt for a sling-back, closed-toe shoe with hose. Your look will be lighter and a little sexier than a more classic pump while giving you seasonally appropriate coverage. Peep-toed pumps will help you achieve the same thing and work well with all types of hosiery, even tights if the rest of your outfit is made of heavier fabrics. Be aware that while sandals are certainly in style and can look great with holiday fashions, you may feel (and/or look!) over-exposed in them for some events with colleagues and clients. Always tap into your own common sense before selecting what to wear to any event.
