For January 2010:
Q: My outerwear storage areas are a disaster. I am tripping over the kids boots to get to my winter coat in the morning and I can never find my gloves, scarves and sunglasses when I need them. Any suggestions?
A: During the winter months we all have extra outerwear needs that can take up valuable storage space if we let them get out of control. Whether you have kids or not, developing systems in your home so you can easily locate items when you need them is a great time management tool. It also makes you feel good when things are put away in an orderly fashion.
To start getting your outwear under control, gather all of it in one place and take a critical look at it and your storage spaces. Sort everything into specific categories, getting rid of items that are beyond repair, don't fit, are missing a mate or that you simply don't like. Shelters and community assistance programs are in great need of your castaways. Commit to giving things that are in good shape that you don’t need anymore a new home. The process tends to become more meaningful when you can envision your excess outerwear being put to good use.
Next, purchase organizational products that can help keep things neat and accessible. We’re big fans of clear storage bins of various sizes that can be stacked one on top of the other. These are ideal for items such as skiwear that you don’t need to access everyday. Another great idea for storing sunglasses, gloves, mittens and even keys is to hang a multi-pocket organizer on the back of a door.
Whenever possible, install hooks on the inside of closet doors and other convenient places near your entry ways to help control the closet overflow in the winter months. Coat trees are also useful in main entrances if you entertain a lot. Boot trays are an inexpensive way to create a tidy space for boots and shoes during the snowy and rainy months. You can find high quality mats ideal for this type of storage in the automotive department of department stores for under $10.
You really don’t need all that much to be well dressed, even in the winter. Pare down and feel the magic of wearing only things that you love!
