March Movie Madness
5 Fashion-Inspired Movies & Series Worth Bingeing

Being an empty nester after raising two sports-enthused boys does have its perks. The laundry is more manageable, the fridge stays stocked longer and the television is no longer shouting sports scores 24/7.

The house did tend to quiet down a bit after the Super Bowl and then would pick up again for March Madness, the college basketball championship tournaments.

Now that I have the TV to myself most weekends, I’m celebrating my own March Madness with a fashion spin and have been bingeing some really great style-inspired shows and movies as winter winds down and the rainy season kicks in.

If you're interested in developing your own March Movie Madness fashion play card, here are 5 of my favorites to include. Bonus: My hubby has enjoyed these shows too which makes them all the better!

The New Look
Apple TV

We just started watching this series and it is so good! A fictionalized retelling of how Christian Dior rose in the fashion world after World War II, while others like Chanel had to rebuild their reputations after either shutting down during the occupation or getting in bed with the Nazis. It’s a spare-no-expense production, with lavish settings and some stylized shots that contrast the glamour of the French haute couture world with the horrors that the French suffered under German occupation in the first half of the 1940s. A must see for history buffs and fashionistas alike.

Maddman: The Steve Madden Story
Peacock/Tubi

I didn’t even know shoe designer Steve Madden was a real person until a client shared this gem of a documentary with me. Witness the incredible rise, fall, and resurrection of Steve Madden, the man who launched a billion-dollar fashion empire and whose branded, reasonably priced shoes are in the closets of women around the globe. The film recounts how Madden rebuilt his life following imprisonment due to his financial involvement with the real-life Wolf of Wall Street, Jordan Belfort. The film takes you through Madden’s early years selling shoes at a store in his hometown in Long Island, being misunderstood due to undiagnosed ADHD and addiction issues, to his obsession with what women wear on their feet and using his incredible talent and work ethic to first create shoes and then many other fashion products under his unforgettable name and legacy.

The Super Models
Apple TV

I loved every minute of this four-part series that spotlights the remarkable careers of Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista and Christy Turlington. If you grew up in the 80s, the clothes, hair, makeup and music will speak to your soul. Unprecedented access to these 4 truly amazing women takes viewers behind the camera and beyond the catwalk, revealing how they dominated the elite modeling world while illuminating a bond that single-handedly shifted the power dynamic of an entire industry. You will cry, cheer them on and fall in love with them all over again.

Coco Before Chanel
Amazon Prime Video

I first watched this movie during the pandemic and then rewatched it recently as my interest in all things Chanel was piqued while watching the New Look. Released in 2009, it is a biographical drama that details the early life of French fashion designer Coco Chanel. It begins with Coco as an abandoned orphan girl and documents what it took for her to overcome such a dire start in life to build her fashion empire. It’s gritty and filled with all sorts of complicated relationships and betrayals. Like her or not, what shines through is her incredible determination and talent. Put your PJs on and settle in. You will not be able to turn it off!

Daisy Jones & the Six
Amazon Prime Video

Finally, while not a fashion movie or series per se, I just wanted to share this musical drama as it touched my heart in so many ways. Based on the book with the same name written by Taylor Jenkins Reid, it depicts a fictional band that rose from obscurity to fame in the 70s, and then after a sold-out show at Chicago's Soldier Field, called it quits. The series picks up decades later when members of the band agree to reveal the truth. The fashion and music are unforgettable, with Elvis’ granddaughter Riley Keough playing the lead role as Daisy. Inspired by Fleetwood Mac, I didn’t want it to end. I loved it!

Reply to this email and let me know if you too have watched any of these shows and what you thought. Please share other documentaries, series and movies that you have enjoyed as well. There's still a week left in March and I’m game to keep my March Movie Madness going!
