Five Holiday Wardrobe Staples for Women

By Mary Lou Andre

If you're interested in kicking your wardrobe up a notch this holiday season without breaking the bank, these 5 holiday wardrobe staples are a great place to start.

#1 Booties
Festive dresses and skirts can go from ho-hum to fantastic by pairing them with dressy booties.

#2 Shawl Wraps
Party ensembles are often difficult to pair with coats, especially when the coat is more casual than your outfit. Warm and stylish, shawl wraps work over just about any outfit and help you make a dramatic entrance wherever you go!

#3 Black and Gold
We're big fans of the color black this time of year. Not only do most closets contain an abundance of pieces in this hue, but black also provides the perfect canvas for creating signature looks. Gold accessories paired with all black ensembles are an "in-the-moment" way to add a punch of razzle dazzle to a holiday wardrobe.

#4 String Bags
Make it a point to collect these handy evening bags year-round. Consignment stores, chic boutiques and antique galleries are wonderful places to source one-of-a kind styles. Their size allows you to accent holiday attire nicely and the string lets you wine and dine hands-free!

#5 Colorful Cashmere Sweaters
If you don't have any cashmere in your wardrobe, consider adding a cashmere sweater in a bright hue that you love. Cashmere can be dressed up or down, is cozy without being too warm and makes a wonderful style statement during the holidays. While bright cashmere sweaters are always easy to pair with black bottoms and blue jeans, we particularly love bright cashmere sweaters worn with winter white this time of year.

Parting Thought: Our portable packing racks (for sale in our online store) can help you create a great staging area as you go through your closet and put together holiday outfits. It's a "stylist" trick that anyone can use!

The holidays are back! Time to get your party on and walk a bit on the glam side.

Here are 5 fresh ideas to inspire you to step it up (when stepping out!) to celebrate the season with extra style. We all deserve to shine. Happy Holidays!

#1 Velvet, Cutouts & Sequins Please!
If you haven't put a party dress on in a while, 'tis the season to do so. Velvet, cutouts and sequins on a variety of mini and midi dresses are the rage. What makes them new (and so much easier to wear than those of yesteryear) – the fabrics. Look for those with just enough stretch and you’ll be dancing the night away in comfort and style.

    #2 Party Pants
If dresses aren't quite your thing, party pants are in abundance too. Cropped, joggers and fuller cuts are all in style and let you rock your holiday spirit with elegance and a hip, modern vibe.

    #3 Lady-Like Pumps (& Flats!)
Consider swapping out your boots and booties for some nostalgic party shoes. Both flats and heels are showing in a variety of colors, fabrics and patterns and many have fun embellishments such as bows, sequins, mesh cutouts and velvet trims. Yup, it’s easy to step out in style right now!

    #4 Buffalo Plaid
If your holiday style is more on the casual side (we certainly understand!), mixing this popular print with what you already own might just be enough to elevate your holiday style in a way that suits your fancy. Outerwear, pants, dresses, boots, bags and layering pieces of all types get in on this act and deliver a big punch of printed style this season.

    #5 All that Glitters
Finally, visit your jewelry box and adorn yourself with a hefty amount of silver and gold. Vintage holiday pins, snowflake earrings and chains of all lengths allow you to party again like it’s 1999!

My 5 must have for xmas party.
1. Satin little black dress
2. red bolero jacket
3. Pearls
4. Satin gloves
5. Satin shoes

This is my go to outfit for holidays or just when I need look pulled together. I got my satin black dress from target for 7.00 clearance rack . 2. Satin red jacket from rainbow. 3 pearls.every woman need a pair pearls. More pearls better. Like coco chanel did it.4. Satin gloves, I got mine from an older cousin for free. She wore to her prom 15 years earlier. Gloves never go out style or get from any beauty supply store.5. Satin shoes - payless. Yes payless. This outfit be good to you, bell of any ball.

Thank you for to post! It's timely and helpful. I have a question. Do you have any low(er) heeled booties that you recommend to petite women? I love the look of ankle boots, but at 5'3" I haven't found a pair yet that doesn't look goofy on me. I'm constantly chasing two small children so heels higher than 2" aren't an option.

Thank you!

Hi Amanda! So great to hear from you. This is Sarah from Dressing Well. I'm also petite and chasing two small children around! I love booties too (when I'm not in my sneakers!) and have some great recommendations.

A style that you might enjoy is a Chelsea boot. This flat low boot that works great with skinny jeans, leggings, and trouser & straight cut pants/jeans as well. There is a line called La Canadienne which offers this style as well as waterproof versions - double duty!

Personally, I love wedge booties and booties with a chunk heel. Two brands I've had luck with in this arena are Steve Madden (for the modern heel and comfort - they work for me!) and also I have a great pair of cute black suede lace up wedges from Clarks from last year that I still love and have admittedly work to the park and out on family excursions with the kids!

You can also search shoe sites/department stores for booties and qualify a specific heel height (i.e. 2", 1" or flat). Hope that helps and cheers to you for putting functionality into your shoe fashion! Happy shopping!

What a great newsletter!! Perfect ideas for the busy times ahead and such a help in planning for work, friends, and family events this coming holiday season. I love the suggestions of shawl wraps and black with gold accessories. Having purchased several cashmere sweaters in luscious shades, my absolute favorite suggestion is to pair winter white with them! Thank you.
