Vacation Ready: 5 Must-Pack Pieces for Tropical Fun

By Dressing Well Stylist Sarah Zengo

I love helping my clients prepare for all their vacation getaways. This time of year, I am most frequently pulling out and evaluating summer wardrobes, getting the client mentally prepared and the clothes perfectly organized to head south. By spending a little time planning ahead, they are ready to relax instead of stressing last minute about what to put in their suitcase.

For those of you lucky enough to be able to relax in the sun this season, here are 5 packing ideas to consider. Bon Voyage!

#1 Plan to Lighten Up
Think whites and brights first -- unearth your summer wardrobe to find the gems you already own that may be perfect for your trip. Consult your itinerary and think about how you’ll be spending your days and nights. Then pull out your favorite summer tops that complement your plans, pair them with white shorts, cropped pants, and skirts to create outfits, and you’ll be halfway there! Pick a signature color or two, such as coral and teal to make mixing and matching as easy as 1-2-3.

#2 Rock a Maxi Dress
Let’s get real, there’s nothing more fun than ditching your day-to-day wardrobe and saucing things up a bit on vacation. Maxi dresses scream sexy and can be perfect for so many occasions. Have fun with pops of color and flattering necklines. Dress your maxi up with sultry jewels and sky-high summer wedges or take it down a notch with your favorite flip-flops and boho earrings.

#3 Suit Up in Style
Don’t underestimate the importance of the suit—bathing suit that is! This is one area where you’ll want to look and feel fab, so seriously, start now and take stock of what you have and try on your collection of les maillots de bain! Personally, I love black bathing suits (dark colors act as a minimizer) and own a variety of black one-piece suits and mix-and-match tops and bottoms: tankinis, single strap, strapless tops, high-waisted and low-rise bottoms, you name it. I have fun each day picking the one that matches my mood and activity. Pick what works for you and up the ante on your swimwear to suit your style!

#4 Don’t Be Afraid to Accessorize
I’m that gal who wears jewelry to the beach. Gold accents on my bathing suit? I’ve got gold studs in my ears and a bracelet to match. Add in a colorful sarong or cover-up and you are as good as dressed for the day! Wide-brimmed beach hats and killer shades can bring out your inner fashionista while giving the major bonus of sun protection. A word to the wise – leave the good stuff at home and bring fun pieces that are not overly expensive or sentimental.

#5 Keep Footwear Under Control
Now that you’ve got your pack in order, consider your footwear! Shoes can take up a lot of room in luggage so aim to take the fewest pairs that will get the job done and make you feel great. Neutral colors that will work with a variety of outfits and also give you what you need for comfort, style and functionality will keep your travel pack stress free. Review your outfits and make sure you have a shoe to match each one.

Last Word
Give yourself plenty of time in advance of your trip to plan your pack and get organized. Lay out your pack and take photos to remind yourself what you will put in your suitcase when the time comes. If you need to purchase anything for your trip, you’ll be able to find exactly what you need and not pay top dollar last minute.

If you’d like to schedule an appointment with us to get you fabulously on your way, we’re here for you. Don’t forget your sunscreen!
