Five Holiday Wardrobe Staples for Women

If you're interested in kicking your wardrobe up a notch this holiday season without breaking the bank, these 5 holiday wardrobe staples are a great place to start.

Fall is off to a great start here at Dressing Well. Our consultants are busy working with their private clients and our workshop and speaking schedule is in high gear. We are truly blessed to be doing work we love.

Of course our fall is never truly underway until our annual "Top Ten" fashion picks for women are selected and posted. This ritual began over 20 years ago when we launched our Dressing Well snail mail newsletter. (Yup, there was no internet back then and we were primarily working only with women!) It was instantly popular and is now the most frequently visited section of our website.

Is Hosiery History?

While word on the street in some circles is that traditional pantyhose are history, we could not disagree more. The "executive presence" discussion regarding all types of hosiery has as much to do with industry, company, ethnicity, situation, age, leadership goals, body type, personal style and, of course, common sense than what is "trending" at the moment.

The Summer Shoe Pledge

For those of you who have been in our community for a while, you may recall that we used to share The Summer Shoe Pledge each year in our summer newsletter. Originally emailed to us in 1999, I’m not sure who authored it, but I do know this light-hearted oath was always a hit. I recently came across it and was struck by how relevant it still is. Here it is again for you to read, share and enjoy – we welcome your comments, too!

Train Your Eye

My freshman basketball coach was the first person I recall telling me I had a “good eye.” Back then it was because I could consistently put the ball in the basket from outside the key. Given the fact that I was vertically challenged and seriously lacking in most other basic basketball skills, I remember this feedback making me feel like I had a special gift. These words never get old, especially with what I do now professionally.

As a stylist, having a “good eye” is about picking winners off a sales rack or easily making outfits from what first appears to be a closet full of clothes with nothing to wear. Like being on a basketball court and making the ball swish, it’s magical when a well-trained eye helps you present yourself better. You can quickly dismiss items that you know won’t work while embracing others that you may never have considered.

50 Shades of Gray

A home improvement project brought me to the paint store this past weekend in search of the perfect shade of gray for our new bathroom. We picked out a few samples, tested them on the walls and finally settled for a shade that made everything in the room fall into place with the intended style. Extra bonus, I can now say I’ve seen “50 Shades of Gray!”

Whether you decide to see the movie or not, it is fun that “gray” is getting so much “play” right now. Not only is it a box office sensation and hot base neutral in home décor, but it’s also a great way to lighten up your wardrobe as we head into spring.

The Power of Red (& Pink!)

We love the color red and are always looking for new ways for clients to wear it well.

In professional situations, we often treat it like a neutral for women, grabbing red jackets, skirts, pants, blouses, dresses, shoes and bags that are appropriate for business to give a pop of color to what is often an otherwise fairly dark wardrobe.

Where I personally have the most fun incorporating red into a wardrobe is with evening wear. Coordinated well, it can be bold, sexy and eye-catching all at the same time.

Four Good F Words

Welcome to the inaugural issue of our Dressing Well Blog. We are excited to bring timely and relevant fashion tips and ideas to you a few times each month using this new format. Some of our ideas will be shared via bulleted tips. Other times, our stylist team will share personal and client stories to make an interesting style statement.

We’d like to make our blog as interactive as possible. Please leave a comment about something we’ve shared (we love the power of group commentary!) and don’t forget to let us know what you’d like to hear more about. We’re listening and eager to respond.

To get things started, I thought I’d outline our signature “4 Good F Words” that are the cornerstone of the work we do helping clients develop their personal style. Whether shopping in your closet or shopping at a store, adopt these words as a way to build a wardrobe that truly fits and flatters all your many personas:
